City of West Hollywood to Host
Historic Preservation Celebration 2012:
“California Dreamin’ At the Hollywood Riviera”
Tuesday, May 22, 2012
The City of West Hollywood will host its 2012 Historic Preservation Celebration on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Riviera, 1400 N. Hayworth Avenue in West Hollywood.
The event’s conversation topic will be L.A. Pool Culture, which will be discussed by featured speakers Frances Anderton from KCRW’s “DnA” program, Jim Heimann from Taschen Books, and Chris Nichols from Los Angeles magazine. Admission is free.
Frances Anderton is the host of the “DnA: Design and Architecture” program on KCRW radio. She produces the station’s national and local current affairs programs “To The Point” and “Which Way L.A.?” She is also the Los Angeles editor for Dwell magazine, and is a regular contributor on Los Angeles design and architecture for the New York Times and other publications.
Jim Heimann is a cultural anthropologist and graphic design historian, and the executive editor for Taschen America, a publisher of books on art, architecture and design. He’s the author of numerous books about the West Coast, Los Angeles and Hollywood, and his private collection of ephemera has been featured in museums around the world.
Chris Nichols served as the Chair of the Modern Committee of the Los Angeles Conservancy from 1997-1999. He has been involved with many cultural preservation issues over the past 20 years, and has helped produced a wide range of educational programs. He’s the assistant editor at Los Angeles magazine, and is the author of the book The Leisure Architecture of Wayne McAllister.
The City of West Hollywood has recognized the importance of preserving its cultural resources since 1984. The City adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance in 1989 and has designated a total of eighty-two historic and cultural resources. The City realizes that its cultural resources give West Hollywood its special character, and are an important reminder of its unique and diverse past.
One of the landmarks of great Los Angeles architecture, the Hollywood Riviera has been described as among the “crown jewels of West Hollywood’s midcentury modern cultural resources.”
Now a condominium complex, the building was designated by the City of West Hollywood as a Local Cultural Resource in 2010.
Musical guests for the Historic Preservation Celebration 2012 will be saxophonist David Samartin and the Aaron Durr Trio.
