West Hollywood, home to one of the world’s most glamorous fashion scenes, last night (er, this morning) banned the sale of new clothing containing animal fur.
The ban is the first in the world.

In a well-attended legislative hearing that began minutes before midnight and ended 90 minutes later, WeHo took another step forward in its role as a world leader in animal rights and protections on a 5-0 vote.
The law will ban the sale of new clothing items containing fur.
Furniture, décor, bedding, leather products are exempt.
The proposal came from John D’Amico, who promoted the ban during his recent victorious city council campaign as a way to spur the city to recognize its special ideology and to act upon it to lead other municipalities, especially in animal rights and protections.
The Fur Free WeHo, the organization that had campaigned door to door for Mr. D’Amico, turned out in droves, vocally and passionately supporting the ban, even applauding when the item was announced (although awaiting a hearing for five and a half hours may have been cause enough for exultation).
The business community raised many concerns, not the least of which was the process by which the law got vetted and the potential economic impact on retailers.
After roughly three dozen speakers – three quarters of whom spoke in support of the ban – John D’Amico summed up and refuted the arguments made in opposition.
The new ordinance is “not about what to wear, it’s not about shame, it’s not about name-calling,” he said.
“It’s about how we live now, about being present, about the impacts we have on the world.”
Council member Abbe Land said flatly, I don’t like fur; none of us wants to do anything to keep [the harvesting of fur] happening and we like to take stands and lead.”
John Heilman and Mayor John Duran both supported the item, but pointed out several areas of the proposed law that required fine tuning, such as a timeline for implementation and protecting second-hand sales.
After a discussion, council agreed to approve the law “in concept,” sending it back to staff for finalization and scheduling a return to council for a second “first reading” of the law.
