Can WeHo Put On A World-Class Film Festival?

West Hollywood, California (February 8, 2010) - Can the Creative City pull off a film festival?

West Hollywood International Film Festival Martin Deluca proved that a lone individual would find it difficult, at best - see Amidst More Allegations, WHIFF Calls It Quits.

If on the other hand the city’s historian, Ryan Gierach, is correct, “West Hollywood has always been more Hollywood than Hollywood,” one could presume that our film community should prove capable of spotlighting our local values through such an event as an International Film Festival.

In light of Mr. Deluca’s announcement to forego a WHIFF2010, WeHo News would like to explore local film community interest in creating what seems an inarguably perfect fit for West Hollywood – a community-based, non-profit WeHo Film Fest.

Therefore, we at WeHo News would like to invite you (and a friend or two) to a feasibility meeting at the end of February.

We envision, in broadest terms, a film festival that promotes new film and filmmakers grappling with the very values that West Hollywood embodies and models: pro-human rights, pro-gun regulation, pro-peace, pro-gender and sexual orientation rights, pro-choice, pro-animal and pro-tenants’ rights.

We’re in the news business, so we’d like to kick the snowball downhill by meeting with potential stakeholders, determining the idea’s feasibility and facilitate formation of a non-profit corporation with a working board of directors.

A WeHo filmmaker of international note, Philippe Mora, whose groundbreaking film “Swastika” recently played in Germany after a 36-year ban, has accepted an invitation to participate. Read more about Mr. Mora and his interest in promoting WeHo ideals here…

WeHo News’ film writer Roy Rogers Oldenkamp wrote a call to the local film community to resurrect the privately-owned and -operated WHIFF as a community-based non-profit with broad stakeholder support.

Thank you for considering this invitation; with support from within the community, there is no reason why WeHo shouldn’t have a film festival of world renown.
