WeHo Partners With Break The Cycle

West Hollywood, California (February 4, 2010) - Saying the its hope is to develop a model to be used by others around the world, WeHo will pitch in to help Break the Cycle, an organization that battles domestic violence in youths’ dating relationships, create and launch the first of its kind teen dating violence awareness campaign specifically targeting members of teen LGBTQ community.

The initiative, which because no council member had any disagreements with it, was passed on this week’s consent calendar at the council meeting.

Introduced by council member Lindsey Horvath, the resolution commits the city to declaring February, 2010, "National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month" to spotlight the violence that oftentimes accompanies teen relationships.

Additionally, the resolution directs Social Services and Special Event staff to begin exploring possible complementary opportunities for the City of West Hollywood to work with Break the Cycle on its LGBTQ initiative.

The problem is significant, especially given the rise of teen domestic violence in relationships.

One in three teens will experience abuse in a dating relationship and two-thirds of them will never report it to anyone.

Dating violence is not just dangerous, it is devastating to a young person’s health and safety.

The effects of dating violence are long-lasting. Teens who experience abuse in relationships act out exhibiting higher rates of drug abuse, school drop-out, high-risk sexual behavior, acts of violence and suicide.

Since 1996, via a multitude of platforms, partnerships and social media, Break the Cycle has helped nearly 300,000 youth avoid abuse and build healthy relationships.

The objectives of this groundbreaking initiative include the following:

1. To unite influencers, educators and advocates within the LGBTQ community to address the issue of dating violence.

2. To educate youth on the dangers of abuse and how to maintain healthy and safe relationships.

3. To inform youth of confidential resources that are available to them

4. To instill in youth the feeling that there are adults who care and will listen.
