West Hollywood, California (Monday, June 22, 2009) – LASC’s exclusive rooftop party, co-sponsored by Diesel and BMW, was one of the most exclusive and hottest soirees during West Hollywood’s Gay Pride Parade. Photo by David Cantor. WeHo News. |
If the Diesel/BMW party was the blast into summer, then Original Penguin’s Beach Party with LASC was the warm-up to a sizzling season of fetes and fashion.
Celebrating Original Penguin’s “Endless Summer” Spring/Summer 2009 Collection, LASC was transformed into a Southern California Beach Blanket Bingo.
Fitting, since Penguin (now owned by Perry Ellis) is responsible for bringing back crisp classic surf trunks and madras button-down shirts that can be easily kit out Tab Hunter and Frankie Avalon.
Penguin was the earliest contributor to American active wear, leisure wear, and American surf wear which later became the root for California Preppiness. It was functionality with style.

Jason Kempter, Penguin’s spokesperson, senses that the American Man is ready to welcome back the brand’s clean and classic tailoring of the Mid-Fifties and Early Sixties, the time period of “Mad Men” and Penguin’s hey days.
They are a vintage brand that is proud of its Americana heritage.
With its friendly range of cuts and fits, Penguin’s broad appeal is for both the father and son sharing the Southern California lifestyle of beach to backyard barbeque.
The brand’s retro-conservative Fifties Republican flair of madras and Bermuda shorts found a devout following Young Hollywood’s Leading Men who found the clothes’ classic details an easy wear and fit for daily life anywhere.

E!’s The Daily Ten host, Sal Masekela and actor, Matthew McConaughey consider it their daily uniform; and the Penguin never ask celebrities for endorsements. They just simply wear it as a refreshing antidote to trend overload besieging Young Hollywood.
The brand categorizes its clothes into two different fits compassing a wide generation of men.
The Classic Fit is a full cut for the more mature surfer while the svelter Heritage Fit is for the more fashion-forward yet vintage-loving son.
The madras shirts in breezy-easy cotton lawn come in the Heritage Fit, slim shoulder and lean through the waist and the more relaxed Classic Fit with an easy shoulder then eased through the waist to accommodate the mature torso.
These shirts sell all day long.

There are more to pick among the surf trunks. The Volley Shorts go down to the knee. They are very popular among middle-aged fans.
The younger gentlemen just discovering the line go nuts over the Box Cut, a tighter fit that cuts mid-thigh for the more fashion-forward guys.
However you cut it, the whole collection sell for below hundred dollars. Original Penguin are cool clothes at cool prices for man of all ages.
The Diesel/BMW rooftop party above LASC was a great spot to sport your “Endless Summer” Penguin Collection.
They go well with the co-sponsored event of coupes and convertibles.
The Bermuda short-clad party-goers had a prime location watching the floats and marching troupes making their way down Santa Monica Boulevard.
A trio of car washers keeps a coupe cool and sparkling clean.
These were the bashes that ignited the start of summer.
