"We went live the day before Thanksgiving," said Brain Ganley, the city's information technology director, "and we've been up since. We didn't make an official announcement because we still have some minor issues to work out and the system will go down every once in a while when we address those. But people along SMB between Fairfax and La Brea can now access the Internet from the street and [Plummer Park]."
The system is called WiFi, short for 'wireless fidelity'. WiFi has lately gained enthusiastic acceptance in many environments as an alternative to a wired Internet connection. Many airports, hotels, and other services offer public access to WiFi networks so people can log onto the Internet and receive emails on the move. These locations are known as hotspots.

West Hollywood, beginning with the ľ mile stretch between La Brea and Fairfax along SMB (and including Plummer Park), will grow in size to a 1.9 sq. mi. "hotspot" by the end of next year, if all goes as planned with the pilot program.
Jeremiah Maudlin in the City's information technology department told WeHoNews.com on August 31 that "[The city] only guarantees a signal along Santa Monica Boulevard and about a half block or so on either side, and inside Plummer Park." The City has been inundated with calls from residents, according to Mr. Maudlin, who are looking forward to switching off their AOL accounts to save a broadband bill. "We don't guarantee any signal at all indoors, only outside," he told WeHoNews.com.
That WiFi umbrella over town will allow people equipped with wireless devices will be able to log on to the Internet without the use of phone lines or other wires while outdoors. Users will experience little to no connection speed loss, since data is carried at rates of between 360-960 Mega-bytes-per-second (roughly six to twenty times dial-up and equivalent to most household DSL or cable connections). And while the radio transmitters used will be four to eight times more powerful than those to which domestic home network user have become accustomed, one watt, those signals won't carry through walls, into sub garages or even around some large obstacles, according to Mr. Maudlin.

Mr. Ganley cautioned residents and visitors who have connectivity troubles not to call city hall. "We cannot service individuals who have trouble getting online. We're not set up for it," he said. "We will make sure the system is up and running, but we can't help individuals with computers that cannot connect to the system."
The city council voted in June to award a contract to build a $45,000 pilot outdoor WiFi project to PCC Network Solutions , a Chatsworth-based systems integration company. PCC won the contract over 14 other firms' bids. The system will consist of seven wireless access points mounted on street lights at the top of traffic signals, spread out across a one mile area stretching along Santa Monica Boulevard, from Fairfax Avenue to La Brea Avenue. Six of the transmitters will sit atop streetlights at Fairfax, Genesee, Curson, Fuller, Formosa and La Brea avenues. The central transmitting radio, or the "brain of the network," according to Mr. Maudlin, will sit on a 15-20 ft. pole atop the Plummer Park Community Center's roof.

After awarding the contract to PCC, Mayor Abbe Land called the pilot "a win-win idea and continues the West Hollywood vision of having technology bring us together." She encouraged community feedback so the city could quickly assess the pilot project "and adapt it for the whole City."
PCC Network Solutions is an integrator of structured cabling systems, data, voice and indoor/outdoor (including Metro Wi-Fi) wireless networks, as well as low voltage systems for security, surveillance, access control and more. PCC Network Solutions is a privately held company with headquarters in Chatsworth, California, and additional offices in Anaheim, California, Tempe, Arizona, and Carrollton, Texas.
