SD Gay Pride Death Toxicology Report In
West Hollywood, California (Thursday, August 21, 2008)

The San Diego county medical examiner's report on Steven Hirschfield, the victim of an officer-involved shooting at a San Diego Gay Pride event, says that he had trace amounts of methamphetamine, ketamine and doxylamine in his blood the night he died.

The toxicology report and the autopsy, released on Tuesday, showed that Mr. Hirschfield was shot in the back, with an exit wound in his chest, contrary to original police reports that described his fatal wound as to the chest.

Attorney for the bereaved family, Brian Claypool, asserted that the trace levels of drugs in Mr. Hirschfield’s system resulted from use of diet pills, cold medicine and from another person “spiking his drink that night,”... [full story]

Hearing on WeHo's 40% Trash Cost Increase
West Hollywood, California (Thursday, August 28, 2008)

West Hollywood City Council will consider a potentially controversial issue – whether to pass increased trash recycling costs onto the businesses that support WeHo 41 percent over four years- at their next meeting on Monday, September 15.

At the same time, the city will also decide whether or not to extend Athens Services’ contract for trash removal for another four years – to 2016.

The sharp price increase stems from “changed conditions causing rising costs for provision of the food waste composting program,” according to the staff report ... [full story]

FOR PET’S SAKE: Let’s Talk Teeth
Pets By Karen Lee Stevens, Santa Barbara, California (Thursday, August 28, 2008) I talked about my “feline’s fang fiasco” in a column awhile back, where I lamented about the fact that two of my cat’s teeth literally popped out of her mouth like popcorn during a routine veterinary exam.

Ouch! Pretty unusual, I thought, especially when you consider that Miss Bella isn’t quite four years old (her birthday is tomorrow, in case you’d like to send gifts).

So last week, I wrestled poor Miss B. into the dreaded cat carrier for another trip to the veterinary clinic ... [full story]

Extended Hours & Campaign Contributions
Op-ed By Steve Martin, West Hollywood, California (Thursday, August 28, 2008)

It was an unprecedented affront.

The City Council’s recent rebuff of a request by City Staff and the Sheriff’s Department for a minimal forty five day moratorium on applications to extend business hours after 2:00 a.m., is a reflection of just how far the Council will go to pander for campaign contributions and shows just how little regard they have for the public’s welfare.

When the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department makes a simple request that City Council refrain from granting any further “after hours” requests so that the Department can evaluate the impact of the applications granted to date, it would seem that City Council would defer to the Sheriff’s professional expertise...
